Birds, by Heidi Rabenau

Birds

perched on the branch

above my head

My ears listen out for their

cheerful chirps

yet

Fat geese

with black beaks

hiss at my heels

nudging for crumbs

numbing my mind

to the blissful music

I was waiting for.

Velvety ducks

with shimmering backs

quack on the pond

responding to their

feathered friends.

The bench I was looking

for to rest

had remains of a pigeon’s

nest and the grass

served the geese

more than me.

The cafe didn’t serve

geese

with cheese and scones

so I sat there

in peace at last.
